OBD2 Scanner vs Code Reader — What's the Difference?

"OBD2 scanner" and "code reader" are often used interchangeably — but they are different tiers of capability. Buying the wrong tier wastes money or leaves you without the module access you need.

Code Readers (Engine Only)

Read and clear powertrain codes, show live engine data, run I/M readiness monitors, and retrieve VIN. Cannot access ABS, airbag, or transmission modules. TOPDON examples: AL400, CarPal US.

Enhanced / Multi-System Scanners

Add ABS, SRS, and transmission module scanning plus service resets (oil, SAS, TPMS, EPB) on supported vehicles. TOPDON examples: AD500, AD600S, ArtiDiag600 Pro.

Bi-Directional Scan Tools

Everything above plus active tests — command actuators, retract EPB calipers, run injector tests, perform coding on supported models. TOPDON examples: TopScan Lite, AD800BT 2, Phoenix Lite 3.

Which Tier Do You Need?

Check-engine light only → code reader. Brakes, airbags, or transmission work → multi-system scanner. EPB service, active tests, or FCA AutoAuth → bi-directional tool. Use the Scanner Finder for a personalized recommendation.
